Starting a Trailer

 

We began the lesson by watching the trailer for ‘A Quiet Place’ and then split into groups. I chose to use the school camera instead of my phone and Jess, Ruby and I thought about good places we could film the trailer in. our first shot was a zoom in of the face carved in rock outside of the tunnel because it creates a nerving start to the trailer and engages the audience. We then saw some fingerprints that had been put on the wall with red paint which could be mistaken as blood so jumped at the opportunity of using that. We then did a couple more shots in the mansion and sometimes held the camera as if it was in the characters point of view to create a dramatic effect. We then did lots with footsteps and mysterious hands appearing and the wind and crows made it look like a horror film.

1.      Camerawork is used in the extract to create meaning by using a reaction shot when Jo is asking the father of the boy they want to question if it is alright to do so. The father then goes on to explain that when the police were needed like when his son was shouted at on the bus and his mother was abused in the street they weren’t there to help so why should he help them. The reaction shot is used twice while the father was explaining this and Jo’s face was very sympathetic and it gave off an impression that she did truly feel guilty.

Another way that camerawork is used to create meaning is when an over the shoulder shot is used while Ryan approaches his son whilst he was hanging out with his friends instead of being in school. Similar to the reaction shot, it shows how his son reacts to having his dad shouting at him and his friends and it also shows his friends reactions in the background too. By doing this type of shot it makes the viewer feel as if they are more included as it looks like they are in the situation themselves standing behind Ryan.

2.      The extract creates a humorous view of policing because you get to see more of what it is like dealing with the public from the police officers view. For example, when Jake is attempting to make his first arrest on a woman who is trying to steal something from a shop, the woman picks up on the fact that he is new and inexperienced so uses it to her advantage and begins to take her clothes off in the middle of the street and grab onto his arm as if he is assaulting her. Obviously, this isn’t very funny for Jake because it was only his first time arresting someone and, in the end didn’t even succeed and was very embarrassed from the situation, but from the audience’s perspective it is very entertaining. Therefore, one way that the extract creates a humorous view of policing is because you can understand how the character must have been feeling in the situation and if it was you, you wouldn’t want people to be laughing at you but since it isn’t it becomes very entertaining as you are glad it isn’t you.

Another way that the extract creates a humorous view of policing is when the police officers are at the police station after arresting the two women and instead of treating the situation seriously as you might expect them to act, they instead start discussing where they think she is from and end up making jokes about one of them being Italian by saying that they have some lasagne stuck between their teeth. Therefore, by making comments like these, it creates a new view of what policing can actually be like in the viewers head and that it isn’t all about fighting and being serious but can actually be quite funny and enjoyable to watch.

One of the main uses and gratifications of video games using Blumler and Katz’s theory is that it provides entertainment and a temporary escape from the real world for all ages and not just children. People of all ages can understand, relate to and find joy in games like The Lego Movie Video Game for all different reasons. For example, adults or senior people may pick up on the older sides of the Movie that is aimed at them, and may understand the story line in more detail. Like how adults working offices jobs can relate to the robots at the beginning following Lord Business and all dressing and acting the same way, it refers to how businesses are trying to limit the amount of freedom the workers have. However, the children may pick up on the fact that Emmet and build and destroy anything he wants without there being any consequences; something most children don’t get to experience so when they play the video game they aren’t used to that amount of control. Therefore, one gratification of video games using the Blumler and Katz’s theory is the pleasure that people of all different ages get when they play the game for all different reasons.

Another one of the uses and gratifications of video games using Blumler and Katz’s theory is that it brings families closer together because it is something they can all participate in. Referring back to the last point, everyone can enjoy the game and movie for different reasons so when a family does find something everyone enjoys it adds an interest that they can all share. It can also be very hard to find a film that is both adult and child friendly that they are all actually interested in and one doesn’t cancel out the other. Altogether, a gratification of the Lego Movie Video Game is that all members of the family can enjoy it and don’t need to worry about it either not being child friendly or not made for adults.

One use of video games using Blumler and Katz’s theory is that it gives people shared values and beliefs that they all agree on. For example, in The Lego Movie Video Game everyone wants the same things to happen, for the main character, Emmet, to win and become a hero and for the villain, Lord Business to be defeated. Therefore, this causes discussions and agreements about their favourite characters and when they get to control these characters in the video game they build up a desperation to complete the mission.

 

One way in which music videos use language to differ from each other is the use of lip-syncing. For example, the music video ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ uses lots of lip-syncing because the singer is describing a story and sip-syncing over the actors helps the reader to visualise this. However, in the music video ‘Sk8ter boy’ the girl is just telling the story without having any actors and lip-syncing because it is mostly directly about her. Therefore, music videos use language like lip-syncing to differ from each other because some songs don’t require or want someone acting out the lyrics.

The typography of MOJO is bold which connotes (=has associations of) orderly and straight forward.By contrast, the  typography of We Love Pop is bubbly and bright which connotes excitement and happiness.

The colour palette of MOJO is limited to mainly black, white and orange which connotes (=has associations of) sternness and a bit of intimidation .By contrast, the colour palette of We Love Pop is bright which makes it seem child-friendly.

The language of MOJO emphasises seriousness and organised whereas the language of We Love Pop is improvised, friendly and bubbly.

The Avengers Prep

In the first five minutes of the Avengers we get to discover how the two main characters are presented and what their personalities are like. Emma Peel is presented as being very bubbly, confident and outgoing which, back in the 1960’s wasn’t a very common way for women to behave. Most women back then would have stayed at home caring for the family while the men go off to work and make the money but that is certainly not the case for Emma. She was also very powerful as there weren’t really any other women like her.

John Steed is presented as almost following Emma’s lead but then also taking control in his own way, how he books train tickets without telling her where they are going. He is dressed however, in the typical outfit men wore in the 1960’s. A suit, hat and umbrella. Although he might have had a different view on women back then because of how he respects Emma and doesn’t think she should stay at home letting the men be the heroes.

Audiences may have enjoyed watching this for many reasons. One of which, is that it gives the women hope and inspires them to be just like Emma Peel. Not necessarily being a hero but it makes them feel like there is more to life than what they are doing. Another reason people may have enjoyed watching the Avengers is that it was something different to what they were used to. It would take them away from their everyday life and stress and bring them into this world where anything was possible.
