03 Creating Media

 Hobby Magazine:

For my hobby magazine I will have information on upcoming events such as Olympia and Badminton Horse Trials. I will have pictures of my horse on the beach and winning our most recent competition. I will also attach a video showing the basics of riding and tips for people if they want to start. I will also have information on top equestrians.

The video that shows the basics of riding also shows why you would enjoy riding. I have tried to film different angles to emphasize certain parts.

MUSIC MAGAZINES

 

• Analyse the media language of MOJO and the BBC magazine. 
• Make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently to fit different kinds of music. (15)

Different types of music is used in both of the magazine covers which is portrayed in different ways. From looking at the Mojo magazine you can tell that the style of music will be something like rock from the way that a member of The Cure is being presented. As well as this, we can see that the BBC magazine will be based on more classical and orchestral music.

Firstly, media language is used in the Mojo magazine to fit the music style of rock by the use of lighting. Lighting is used here to make the band member of The Cure look very pale and ghost-like. This is by shining a bright white light into their face, creating shadows under the chin and around their face, making them look more threatening and projects their features. They also wear a heavy face of makeup with bright lipstick and dark eyeshadow to, again, make you feel intimidated  by him and gives you an idea that his music will be like that too. Another way is by cluttering the cover. To elaborate, the Mojo cover is very busy and crowded with lots of titles and colours. This tells us that the kind of music will be messy and out of the ordinary. The colours used are also bright and contrasting from each other, such as how there is a mixture of red, white, blue, grey, orange and black. These colours show how the music The Cure plays will be detailed with a heavy amount of volume and instruments. Therefore, media language is used here to fit rock music by how they use extreme lighting and vibrant colours.

On the other hand, the media language in the BBC is more gentle and soft to fit the music its playing. For example, the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason is presented as being young, happy and successful. He is wearing a casual red t-shirt and the only light being used is natural looking and hardly noticeable. This contrasts to the Mojo magazine where they used extreme lighting to exaggerate the facial expressions and the man was dressed in white. Sheku Kanneh is smiling as well which makes it seem calm and relaxed. As well as this, the layout of the cover is very neat and tidy with colours like black and red to show how the music will be elegant and balanced. Therefore, Media language is used differently to fit classical music by using basic colours and layout and natural lighting.

In conclusion, the two types of music, rock and classical, can clearly be differentiated from each other by the way media language is used differently. Such as, having no added lighting in the classical magazine cover to show how the music will be more calm and natural to having so much lighting in the rock cover that you can barely make out the background or clothing. The layout in the rock cover is also a lot more cluttered than the classical one and you can tell that the music will be less organised, whereas in the classical magazine cover it all looks very smart and formal.

03 Creating Media

Hobby Magazine:

 I enjoy horse riding because it gave me something to do whilst we have been in Lockdown and it gives me a reason to work hard. I work at a riding school every Sunday to be able to afford to look after my horse and I enjoy going out to competitions with him. I have also made loads of friends out of it.

For my double page spread I would probably have photos of me riding my horse at the beach or winning our most recent show.

Factual Television Programme:

For my factual television programme I would get two teens to show the struggles of being a teenager and at the same time make it enjoyable for teens y adding some comedy. My video would be about dealing with those struggles and showing teens that it will be ok in the end.

Homepage:

For the homepage I would do it on horse riding and target it at other teen equestrians and anyone that wants to start riding. I would give advice and riding tips and show images of the things you can achieve. I would include a video showing a horse being tacked up and ridden.  

Music Video:

For my video I  would do a song called 'somewhere only we know' but the Lily Allen version because I think you can do a lot with it. It might look good if you do it on a beach. 

01 The Avengers

 1. What is your impression from the 60's era?

my first impression of the 60's was that it was a very bright and colourful era. Everyone seemed so much more confident and outgoing than they are now and they all had their own individual styles whist following the trends at that time. this era comes across to me as being enjoyable and care-free, this is because all the music was upbeat and everyone looked like they were always enjoying themselves.

2. Where does this come from?

this comes from watching the trailer of 'Austin Powers'. in the trailer we see what the fashion was like back then. for example, big hair and colourful clothing were very popular and shows how everyone liked to express themselves. also, the comedic side of it shows me how they liked to have fun with little care.

Chapter  7 how is camerawork used to create meanings? Find examples of camera angles, camera shot types and camera movement.

An example of a camera angle is a birds eye view shown near the start of the chapter. this creates meaning by showing the vast space that Jake will need to navigate the police around. By doing this angle it shows you how busy and confusing this area is with many road options to take. 

Another example of a camera shot is a point of view shot. this is used when Jake and Ryan are in the police car and the camera is angled so it looks like you are a part of the scene. this creates meaning because you become more attached to the show as you feel like you are involved. this will encourage you to continue watching because you are intrigued about what will happen in this chase as you feel involved.

Finally, in this chapter a camera movement called Pan is used. this is when the camera moves either vertically or horizontally but fixes on a certain point. For example, when we see the car Jake was chasing going past the police officers on the wrong road after he has given them the incorrect directions. this adds meaning because it shows how close Jake was but was one road away. It also shows how fast the vehicle is travelling and how the police officers only had one chance to get it right and catch him and they won't have an opportunity to do it again as they won't be able to catch up with the car.

it is when tv is available on a range of devices such as mobile phones, games consoles and tablets.

it is a routine for broadcast television where content is streamed as either box sets or individual programmes.

-Serial narratives in some dramas encourage loyalty as in order to follow the storyline, audiences have to regularly tune in and watch new episodes.

-Some dramas contain a lot of mystery and suspense, grabbing the audiences attention.

-Some channels rely on certain popular shows that encourage the audience to stream them from that channel.

4. What is 'long form television drama' ? [2]

Long form television drama is where the show goes on for a while with new episodes regularly occurring. this tests the audiences loyalty for the show because they have to constantly be engaging with the show to keep up with the storyline.

A flashgrip programme is a show that has been created to entertain a certain category of people. these people will continue to watch this programme as it is dedicated to their interests.

1. What do you understand by the terms 'live' content and 'on demand' content? live content is when the show you're watching is happening at the present time your seeing it and on demand is when you are watching something after it has happened.
2. What is the demand for 'live' content like? the demand for live content is massive because people like to think that t hey are seeing it at the same time it is happening. especially as coronavirus is happening some people might feel like they are missing out on the normal things they do so by watching it live makes them happier.

Apply Blumler and Katz's audience framework to what you learn from this article. from this article using Blumler and Katz's theory you learn that audiences get lots of joy out of watching television. they also feel connected with their family and people outside the house as it is something they can all relate to. it brings the family together and helps them to bond with friends because it is something everyone enjoys and wants to do together.
   

How are musicians presented?

 

John Lennon is presented as being very serious and blunt in this front cover which isn't something you might expect from a musician going in front of a Mojo magazine as they normally like to express themselves. however, the effect that Lennon is giving off in this cover is actually very powerful and it grasps the audiences attention because it is so different. although Lennon isn't expressing himself as some of the other musicians have done, the way he is  being presented is very strong. For example, this picture would make the readers feel intimidated by his stern face looking at them, and because of how blunt it is it almost makes you feel uncomfortable. this gives off a powerful message that just because you are famous doesn't mean you have to change who you are. 

the magazine is covered with blue, white and black writing with a huge colourful cd in the corner. this adds to the energy Lennon is sending off as it blends in with him and helps him to express himself further. the writing is scattered around him but is avoiding his face at all times as that is the part that should stand out the most.

the lighting makes the magazine look soft and welcoming, contrasting to the look on Lennon's face. altogether, the writing, lighting and photo combined make this magazine cover very effective and it presents John Lennon as someone you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of and makes him look very professional.

 Newspaper industries –ownership and control question: who controls The Observer / Guardian and what are its values?

The Observer and the Guardian are owned by a trust that was set up in the 1930s. 

The Astor family were the ones to establish The Observer's liberal values, with David Astor as the editor until  mid 1970s. it easily fitted it the Scott Trust

Press freedom and regulation question: What is meant by 'a free press'? When The Guardian newspaper investigated (and revealed) what The News of The World newspaper had done to get stories, what big changes in press regulation resulted?

'A free press' is when newspapers and older media can campaign on political issues and journalists are expected to be very critical of people in power.

When The Guardian newspaper investigated and showed what 'The News of The World' newspaper did to get stories, in response, most of the press joined IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation) which didn't want to apply to the recognition body as they saw this as unwarranted state interference in the free press.

this means that the newspaper can keep the original parts of the newspaper but can also add in new things such as videos and comment sections

there are lots of different sections that give pleasure to people who like that topic. for example, there are dance, music and movie reviews and also architecture and video games.

the Observer meets readers needs for personal identity and social integration by showing different opinions and reviews on certain topics. it also allows them to expand their reading and social skills. they can also chat about their views online and make new friends whilst doing this.

Active/passive audiences question: in what way can The Observer's audience be 'active' ?

The Observers audience can  be active by doing a few things. One way they can be active is by commenting and sharing their view on certain topics. you are actively engaging with the newspaper and its other viewers.

The Observers twitter page enables the audience to see what the front page will be the day before the newspaper is released. This creates excitement and suspense for the followers because they are intrigued to read the articles described in the front cover. Having the front page on the twitter account also helps attract a bigger audience because people will come across the front cover instead of seeing it in a shop, especially as most people aren’t going anywhere due to coronavirus. If someone sees something they like on the front cover they will likely go and buy the rest of the paper.

Promoting Media: Lego Movie Video Game

 

One of the uses and gratifications of video games is how you can interact with it in many ways. For example, although the Lego movie video game is not an online multiplayer game, there is still lots of ways for the player to interact with the game. One way that they can interact with the game is all the Lego figures guiding you through the levels and making it seem like you really are talking to them. therefore, by having lots of ways that the player can socialise with the game, it enables them to feel as if they are part of it even more and will encourage them to keep playing as they have company. The player can feel as if it is a way to escape reality.

Another use and gratification of the Lego Movie video game is how it can help to form bonds off screen as well. This is because if two people have been playing the same game they can relate with and discuss their progress together. Playing the same game gives people a reason to interact with each other and by doing this, it can bring you closer together. As well as this, if you played the game in multiplayer you are experiencing the aspects of the game at the same time.

Targeting audiences through the lego movie ad break

 

1.       1. The fact that all three companies payed for their own production costs shows that they know they can benefit more from using the Lego movie than the Lego movie will from being in their advert. It can also make their company reach lots of new age groups because everyone is familiar with Lego so are intrigued if they see something with Lego in it.

2.       2. The decision to make the advert out of bricks was made because it prepares the viewer for the film and if they like what they see in the advert they are more encouraged to watch the film. Also, if a child saw an advert with Lego on it they would stay to watch it and if someone was unfamiliar with Lego but know the original adverts then they would stay to watch it too.

3.       3. It is important to remind the audiences of the underlying message because otherwise they might get carried away with the advert and forget the reason behind it or they might not know about the film in the first place and the advert doesn’t mention it then they are not achieving anything by creating an advert out of Lego.
